SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 21, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team has clinched at least a share of the Red River Athletic Conference title with the 90-50 win over Wiley College. The Saints are now 22-6 overall and 15-2 in conference, while the Lady Wildcats move to 8-17 overall and 6-11 in conference.
The Saints are 16-5 against the Lady Wildcats. Earlier this season, they defeated Wiley 99-46.
The Saints started the game with the lead taking a 10 point advantage after just four minutes. In fact, the Saints kept the Lady Wildcats to just seven points in the first quarter while scoring 30.
In the second quarter, the Saints continued to climb through a 40-point lead while still limiting the Lady Wildcats to nine points at the sixth minute. Wiley finally got a little wind to score 16, as the half ended with the Saints leading 49-13.
During the first half, Destinee King (SR/Antelope, Calif.) broke the all-time defensive rebounds record and now stands with 359, She surpassed Courtney Bayliss, who had 357 in two years of play.
The Saints completely dominated the Lady Wildcats throughout the second half, taking a high of 43 and closing out the game with the 90-50 win.
Everyone on the Saints squad scored and the team was led by Jamia Miller (JR/Odessa, Texas) with 13, Samantha Atkinson-Roach (JR/Houston, Texas) and Kasey Saldana (JR/San Antonio, Texas) with 12, Destinee King with 11 and Regina Sheffield (SR/Menifee, Calif.) and Lena Wilson (JR/Converse, Texas) with 10. King had her ninth double-double of the season and added 13 rebounds, nine on defense and four on offense.
Wiley was led by Jaida Carson, who scored 13 and Jasmyn Jackson, who added 10. Damonica Franklin added 13 rebounds.
Inside the box
The Saints combined for 32-of-71 from the field for 45.1 percent, 10-of-19 from beyond the arc for 52.6 percent and 16-of-26 from the charity stripe for 61.5 percent. Wiley was 16-of-64 shooting for 25.0 percent, 6-of-19 from the three-point line for 31.6 percent and 12-of-22 free throws for 54.5 percent. OLLU tallied 53 rebounds and Wiley had 34. Additionally, the Saints forced 19 turnovers and committed 16.
OLLU will host Jarvis Christian College on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. The Saints will honor seniors Regina Sheffield, Brianna Henson (SR/Dunlap, Ill.), Mikki Flores (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Destinee King.
