SAN ANTONIO (March 20, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team fell to NCAA D3 Trinity University last night in a nonconference game on the campus of Trinity. The Saints are now 16-14 and remain 7-2 in conference. Trinity moves to 16-3 overall.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney, "We pitched it well enough to win. A few costly mistakes defensively and our bats did not come to life until late in the game. We had some chances to plate some runs early and failed to take advantage. We have to learn from it and get ready for conference this weekend."
The Saints are 2-6 against the Tigers. Last year, they lost 2-4 and 2-7.
Ty Cook (SO/Highlands, Texas) started on the mound for the Saints. He kept the Tigers scoreless in the first and second inning. The Saints added a run in the third inning. Robert Lopez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) reached base after the pitcher struck him and he advanced first to second and then to third on a wild pitch. Matt Mihalov (JR/Conroe, Texas) reached on a walk, and he also advanced on a wild pitch. Lopez ran home on another wild pitch to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Tigers tied it up 1-1 on a throwing error.
Trinity added three runs in the sixth inning. John Tucker singled up the middle and Michael Goodrich and Mason Merideth came home. A single from Logan Morrison sent Tucker home, and the Tigers took the 4-1 lead.
Brett Vasquez (FR/Baytown, Texas) subbed in for reliever Joey Baker (JR/Cuero, Texas) in the eighth inning. Jake Martin hit a triple to centerfield and Merideth hit a single to send Martin home. The Tigers took the 5-2 lead.
In the ninth inning, the Saints threatened after scoring two runs and trailed 5-4 lead. Jorge Collazo Jr. (SO/San Antonio, Texas) singled to left and both Jose Diaz and Matt Mihalov came home. The game ended with the Tigers winning 5-4.
Suffering the loss for the Saints was Ryan Ramsey (SR/Grapevine, Texas), who pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
The Saints will travel to Austin for a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series against Huston-Tillotson University. On March 21, the teams will play at 4 p.m., and on March 22, the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
