SAN ANTONIO (April 4, 2019) – Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) softball team put on a show in the doubleheader victory of crosstown rival NCAA DIII Trinity University (TU). The Saints defeated the Tigers 9-1 in only five innings in game one. In the second game, the Saints went the full seven innings and beat the Tigers 6-3. The Saints move to 12-11 overall and the Tigers fall to 13-14.
Head Coach Kristine Samaniego added, "We played 12 strong innings of softball. After a few days off, the team came back rejuvenated and hungry to work hard and win. We strung together 23 hits as a team and kept our errors minimal. We are playing our best right now and having the most fun. The timing is perfect because we have some very important conference series coming up that could put us back on top in RRAC play."
History
After a victorious night, the Saints are now 11-8 all-time against the Tigers.
Game one overview
Ciera Martinez (SO/San Antonio, Texas) kicked things off in the circle for the Saints. She pitched lights out holding the Tigers to two hits, one run, while striking out seven.
The first inning started in favor of the Saints with Madison Nunn (FR/Cibolo, Texas) singling to left. Kennah Kennedy (SO/Frost, Texas) grounded out for the first out of the inning. Nicole Kassis (FR/San Antonio, Texas) reached base on a fielder's choice, which resulted in another out for the Saints. Joanna Gonzalez (FR/San Benito, Texas) stepped into the batter's box and hit a shot to centerfield and advanced Kassis to second. A single from Martinez scored Kassis and advanced Gonzalez to second. A wild pitch from TU advanced both baserunners. A defensive miscue from the Tigers added another run for the Saints when Gonzalez crossed the plate. Jennifer Estrada (FR/El Paso, Texas) reached first off of a fielding error and Madeline Wolken (SO/Houston, Texas) grounded out to third to end the inning.
There were scoreless second and third innings, but TU mustered up the offense to add one run to their name. The lone run came from a homerun that was sent out of the park by Marisa Trevino.
Although the Tigers added one run, the Saints answered back in the top of the fifth inning with seven runs. Nunn started off the inning with a single to the infield and she stole second to get the Saints into scoring position. Kennedy singled to the pitcher with a bunt and advanced Nunn to third. Kassis stepped into the box and reached first on an error from TU's defense. Nunn scored on the play and Kennedy advanced to second. A single from Gonzalez scored Kennedy and sent Kassis to first. A fielder's choice off of a hit from Martinez was the first out of the inning. Gonzalez and Martinez advanced on the bases after a wild pitch from TU. Estrada walked and that loaded up the bases for Wolken. She hit a double to score Martinez and Gonzalez. Kayla Dreese (FR/San Antonio, Texas) reached first off of an error from TU's infield and Estrada was able to score on the error. Ariel Montgomery (FR/San Antonio, Texas) was hit by a pitch, which loaded up the bases for the Saints. A single from Nunn scored Wolken and advanced the baserunners. Kennedy grounded out, but was able to score Dreese. Kassis ended the inning with a ground out. TU was unable to come up with the offense to keep them in the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Saints defeated the Tigers 9-1 in five innings.
Game two overview
Putting in seven innings of work was left-hander Montgomery. She allowed six hits, three runs, one homerun, issued three walks and struck out four.
OLLU jumped on the board early in the first inning. Nunn was the first out of the inning with a ground out, but Kennedy followed with a single to the outfield. Wolken stepped into the batter's box and singled to advance Kennedy to second. A fly out from Gonzalez was good enough for Kennedy to move to scoring position. Amanda Guerra (SR/Stafford, Texas) was hit by a pitch and that loaded up the bases for the Saints. A wild pitch from TU's pitching staff scored Kennedy and advanced the runners. Dreese hit a double to score Guerra and Wolken. Gabrielle Chacon (FR/Pearland, Texas) ended the inning with a ground out.
In the second inning, the Saints added to their lead with one run coming from Estrada. TU answered back in the third inning with one run coming from Emily Barefield. OLLU's Nunn got on base in the fourth inning and scored off of an RBI from Wolken to continue to the offensive threat from the Saints.
The fifth inning was scoreless for both sides, but OLLU wanted to add to their lead. In the sixth inning, Montgomery started off the inning with a pop out. Nunn flew out to the outfield, but Kennedy came out and singled to second. She stole second base and third base to put a runner in scoring position for the Saints. Wolken walked, and Kennedy stayed at third. Gonzalez hit a single and Kennedy scored. TU came up in the bottom of the sixth inning to score one run off of a homerun from Trevino.
TU tried to fight back in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they were only able to muster up one run. Emily Vaclavik scored for TU, but OLLU's offense proved to be too much for the Tigers. The Saints defeated the Tigers 6-3.
