VICTORIA, TEXAS (April 26-27, 2019) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) closed out its regular season with a series win over the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV). The Saints won the first game 3-0 and dropped the second one 2-3. They closed out the series with am 11-6 win. They improve to 29-22 overall and 18-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference – their best conference record in history.
With the win, the Saints finished in second place in conference and will be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament that takes place May 3-6.
UHV ends their season with an overall 16-30 record and 11-16 in conference.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "Winning a series on the road to finish the regular season was great. We wanted to sweep no doubt, but we came back and played well in game three.
"Logan was great again in game one and we got big hits when we needed them.
"Game three it took us a while to get started and we just couldn't get anything going offensively., Game three our bats came alive and we pitched it and made plays when we needed to.
"Now it's on to the second season, so we need to rest up and get ourselves ready for Friday."
History
The Saints are 12-13 against the Jaguars. Last season they won 5-4, 9-8, 5-4 and 10-4.
Game one overview
The Saints got on the board in the top of the first. Jacob Mitchell (SO/Harker Heights, Texas ) started the offense with a hit to center. Daniel Anciso (SR/Harlingen, Texas) then blasted a homer to put the Saints up 2-0.
In the third, TJ Kassner (SR/Corpus Christi, Texas) doubled to reach base, and Mitchell hit to center, which sent Kassner home. The Saints took the 3-0 lead. No other runs were scored.
Mitchell led the Saints going 3-3 adding a run and an RBI. Anciso went 2-4 and added two RBIs and a run.
Logan Garza (SO/Round Rock, Texas) pitched a complete game, while allowing four hits and striking out 13.
Game two overview
Kassner reached base on a walk, and Mitchell hit a double to begin the game. A hit from Jose Diaz (JR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) sent Kassner home, and the Saints took the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Jaguars added their first runs of the season to take the 2-1 lead. They added another run in the sixth and now led 3-0.
OLLU scored in the seventh. Boedy Flores (FR/Harlingen, Texas) hit a triple, and a ground out from Nick Ludwig (SR/Tomball, Texas) sent him home.
The game ended with the Saints losing 3-2.
Mitchell, Diaz, Xavier Solis (JR/Victoria, Texas), Flores and Chapa each had one hit, while Diaz and Ludwig had one RBI each.
Aaron Gonzalez (JR/Houston, Texas) started on the mound and he pitched five innings, while allowing three hits and two runs and striking out six. He suffered the loss.
Game three overview
The Jaguars kept the Saints scoreless in the top of the first but added a run in the bottom of the inning to take the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, they added two more runs to take the 3-0 lead.
The Saints took over the lead in the fourth. Robert Lopez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) reached first on a strikeout and dropped ball. Andrew Ogletree (SO/Mission, Texas) came in to pinch run. Alec Martinez (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas) hit a triple and Ogletree came home. With Ryan Ramsey (SR/Grapevine, Texas) reaching on a walk, Ryan Chapa (SO/Corpus Christi, Texas) hit a three-run homer to give the Saints the 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, the Jaguars threatened with two runs scored to give them the 5-4 lead.
The Saints came back in the top of the sixth. Ramsey reached on a hit and Chapa got to first on a bunt. Kassner hit a sac-fly to send Ramsey home. Mitchell came up to bat to hit a two-run homer. He was followed by another homer from Jose Diaz. The Saints took the 8-5 lead.
In the seventh inning, Kassner doubled to send Ramsey home, and the Saints now led 9-5.
The Jaguars added one run in the bottom of the seventh, and the Saints still led 9-6.
With Boedy Flores on base, Xavier Solis hit a homer in the ninth to end the game with the Saints winning 11-6.
TJ Kassner went 3-4 adding two RBIs, Mitchell went 1-5 adding one run and two RBIs. Xavier Solis went 1-1 adding a run and two RBIs. Ryan Chapa went 1-4 adding two runs and three RBIs.
Ty Cook (SO/Highlands, Texas) pitched one inning and earned the win.
What's next
The Saints will get set for the conference tournament that will take place in Shreveport, La. May 3-6. OLLU is scheduled to play the first game on May 3 at noon against Texas College. The winner of that game will play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., while the loser will play on Saturday at noon.
