STERLINGTON, LA. (May 7, 2019) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team ended its record-breaking season on Sunday with losses to Jarvis Christian College and LSU-Shreveport. The 9-0 and 7-3 games bring the Saints final 2019 record to 31-24 – the best finish for team since it began competing in 2015.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney commented, "Well, Monday was not a good day for us. But it doesn't take away from what this group was able to accomplish this season. We had a record-setting season and raised the bar for this program. I'm very proud of our players for their commitment and the work they put in this season.
"In game one versus Jarvis, we dug ourselves a hole and weren't able to get anything going offensively. We did a few things that have been uncharacteristic for us, and we couldn't get anything going.
"Game two versus LSUS was a great game for the most part. I am very proud of the way Logan Garza bounced back and pitched a heck of a game. We came to life a little offensively and created some opportunities. The hidden ball trick late in the game was a momentum changer for sure, give them credit for catching us and me off guard with it. We continued to battle and didn't quit; we just couldn't scratch anymore.
"Overall, we had a lot of guys step up in lots of situations, and we learned a lot about ourselves. I know we will be better from the experience and lessons learned this season. I want to thank our seniors for their commitment to the program and for their efforts during their time as a Saint. It was a great ride, and we all wish them the best."
Game vs. Jarvis overview
Saints' pitchers, starter Triston Scherrer and subs Ryan Ramsey Layne Klostermann and Brett Vasquez allowed 16 hits and nine runs in the game while striking out nine. No runs were scored for the team, but a hit came from TJ Kassner, Jose Diaz, Daniel Anciso and Xavier Solis. Winning pitcher Tyler Holt pitched a complete game and allowed the five hits while walking one and striking out nine.
The Saints had won the Jarvis series, recording two wins – 3-0 and 11-1 and losing the final game 13-5.
Game vs. LSU-Shreveport overview
As the home team, Logan Garza started on the mound for the Saints. He allowed two hits to begin the game, but he was able to close out the inning without a run.
In the top of the second, the Pilots added two runs on one hit to take the early lead.
Both Garza and Pilots' Andrew Lowe were immersed in a pitching duel through the fifth inning – both not allowing a hit.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints broke through to score three runs to take over the lead. Matt Mihalov started the rally with a bunt, and a balk from Lowe sent him to second base. Matthew Klar singled to left, sending Mihalov home. Klar was picked off for the first out, and Ryan Chapa doubled, while TJ Kassner reached on a walk. Lowe was then replaced with Jake Sullivan. Jacob Mitchell got a single, and with the bases loaded, Jose Diaz reached first on an error by the second baseman Miquel Morgan. Chapa came home on that error. The Saints threatened to score more runs, which prompted the LSUS coach to sub in another pitcher, Stachys McCloud, into the game. He was able to strike out the two batters he faced to end the inning, and the Saints now led 3-2.
The Pilots added a run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Ty Cook came in to relieve Garza on the mound in the seventh, and he allowed two runs to increase the Pilots' lead to 6-3.
The Saints had a chance in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mihalov singled, and Klar reached base on Jordan Trahan's error. Chapa's bunt sent Mihalov to third. After hiding the ball in his glove, third baseman Payton Robertson showed the ball to the umpire and then tagged Mihalov, who had stepped off the bag. A ground out from Kassner ended the inning.
Joey Baker relieved Cook with two outs in the inning. He was able to strike out the one batter he faced.
The Saints could not connect in the bottom of the seventh, and the Pilots came back to the dugout, with their offense scoring another run. The game ended with the Pilots winning 7-3.
Cook suffered the loss after pitching .2 innings.
Leading on offense for the Saints was Matt Mihalov, who went 3-4 adding a run. Jacob Mitchell went 2-5. Others getting a hit were Daniel Anciso, Matthew Klar, and Ryan Chapa. Klar had one RBI.
