DALLAS (Dec. 5, 2019) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team rolled to a 121-81 win over Paul Quinn College (PQC) in its first Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game of the season. The 121 points are the most the Saints have scored in a game since January. No. 16 ranked OLLU improves to 4-4 and 1-0 in conference, and Paul Quinn drops to 2 7 and 0-1 in conference.
Coach Stacy Stephens commented on the win, "I believe that we set that tone that we want to play up-tempo, move the ball around and play OLLU basketball. I loved how the team shared the ball and got great shots. I believe Paul Quinn is a dangerous team in our league, and they are going to give teams a hard time throughout conference play."
History
This is the 19th matchup against Paul Quinn, and the Saints are 17-1, including a four-game win streak.
Basics
The Tigers matched the pace of the Saints throughout the first quarter and the Saints led by three. OLLU started to pull away in the second quarter and went on a 12-0 run. The Saints led by 24 at halftime, led by 26 points from Kasey Saldana (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and a 55.3 percent mark shooting from the field.
The Saints continued to increase their lead in the second half. OLLU forced 28 turnovers total and shot over 50 percent from both the field and three-point line. Saldana finished with a season-high 30 points, and five different players tallied double-digit points. Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Saints won by 40 points and led by 45 points at one point in the fourth quarter.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Saldana led the Saints in scoring with 30 points. Jamia Miller (SR/Odessa, Texas) scored 22 points, followed by Mgbeike and Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) with 14. Mgbeike led the Saints with 10 rebounds, followed by Emiko Hemphill (JR/San Antonio, Texas) with nine. Angeline Sanchez (FR/Cibolo, Texas) led the team with eight assists.
PQC was led by Symone Carmenar with 20 points. Jade Butler led the team with nine rebounds. Johnesha Wilson led the Tigers with four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 47-of-88 shooting for 53.4 percent, 20-of-39 from three-point range for 51.3 percent and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line for 63.6 percent. Paul Quinn shot 29-of-64 for 45.3 percent, 4-of-13 three-pointers for 30.8 percent and 19-of-32 from the free-throw line for 59.4 percent.
The Saints grabbed 49 rebounds while the Tigers collected 35. OLLU forced 28 turnovers and committed 23.
