SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 16, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team swept the doubleheader against Millsaps College (MC) today. The Saints won the first game 5-4 and the second game 9-0 in five innings. The Saints are 6-6 on the season and 0-0 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play.
Head Coach Bruce Lenington said, "Today was a great bounce back day for us. Millsaps College presented some challenges and forced us to make in-game adjustments. I was happy with how the team played."
Game One
Kayla Dreese (SO/San Antonio, Texas) started off the doubleheader with a home run in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The Majors scored two runs in the top of the second inning on a double by Brooklyn Wascom and an error by Ariel Montgomery (SO/San Antonio, Texas).
The Majors maintained a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Saints scored four runs to take a 5-2 advantage. Kennah Kennedy (JR/Frost, Texas) scored on an error and Joanna Gonzalez (SO/San Benito, Texas) hit a two-run home run to left field. Ariel Montgomery would score later in the inning on an error.
The Majors responded in the top of the sixth inning with two runs. Felicity Villanueva (FR/El Paso, Texas) picked up the save after allowing one hit in the top of the seventh inning and guiding the Saints to a 5-4 win. Starting pitcher Madison Nunn (SO/Cibolo, Texas) allowed three earned runs and struck out two batters in five and one-thirds innings of work.
Game Two
The Saints dominated game two and won 9-0 in five innings. Starting pitcher Felicity Villanueva allowed four hits in five innings and struck out one batter.
OLLU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ariel Montgomery smacked a double to bring in Joanna Gonzalez. Deandra Vera (FR/Uvalde, Texas) scored the other run later in the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Gonzalez doubled to center field to score Ysa Gonzales (FR/San Marcos, Texas) and give the Saints a 3-0 lead. The Saints loaded the bases and Terri Valderrama (FR/San Antonio, Texas) hit a walk-off grand slam to complete the sweep of the Majors. The Saints won 9-0.
