SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 22, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to Wiley College (WC) 78-65 today. The Saints drop to 9-18 overall and 5-12 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Wildcats improve to 10-12 overall and 8-8 in conference.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "This was a disappointing loss for a lot of different reasons. I thought Wiley was the aggressor. We have to learn from games like these and improve, but for now it's about getting over this disappointment."
The Saints are 16-8 against Wiley and won the previous matchup this season 73-71.
Both teams struggled shooting in the first half. Victor Roper (FR/San Antonio, Texas) led the Saints with 12 points and Ruben Monzon (SO/San Diego, Calif.) grabbed four rebounds. Wiley took a six-point lead into halftime behind 12 points from Devin Ellis.
The Saints cut the Wildcats lead to two points with under nine minutes to play. Wiley responded and led by 13 with six minutes remaining. The Saints weren't able to bounce back and Wiley won 78-65. OLLU shot 50.9 percent from the field and Ruben Monzon fell one rebound shy of a double-double.
Monzon led the Saints with 17 points, followed by Roper with 14. Monzon tallied a team-high nine rebounds. Darin Minniefield (JR/Houston, Texas) led the Saints with 10 assists.
Ellis led the Wildcats with 21 points. Jerrell Doorbal led the team with 16 rebounds and scored 13 points for a double-double. Travious Grubbs tallied a team-high four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 27-of-53 shooting for 50.9 percent, 6-of-22 from three-point range for 27.3 percent and 5-of-14 from the free-throw line for 35.7 percent. Wiley shot 27-of-54 for 50 percent, 7-of-17 three pointers for 41.2 percent and 17-of-20 from the free-throw line for 85 percent.
The Saints grabbed 23 rebounds while the Wildcats collected 35. Both teams allowed 17 turnovers.
