SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 23, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) University Saints baseball team faced Midland University (MU) in a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. The Saints won the series 3-1 and move to 10-9 on the season. Midland is now 2-9 this season. The doubleheaders were seven innings for the first game and nine innings for the second game.
Head Coach Bryan Aughney said, "It was good to win the series 3-1 before we begin conference play next weekend. We pitched great all weekend and I was pleased with that. In the games that we won we managed to manufacture some runs and do enough to win."
The first game of the series was a pitching battle between Logan Garza (JR/Round Rock, Texas) and Tyler Seebaum until the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrew Ogletree (JR/Mission, Texas) scored on a fielder's choice hit by Jorge Collazo Jr. (JR/San Antonio, Texas) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Jose Diaz (SR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) came in for the save in the bottom of the seventh inning. He threw a 1-2-3 inning to give the Saints the win 1-0. Starting pitcher Garza allowed only three hits in six innings of work and struck out six batters.
Midland's bats came alive in game two after only recording three hits in the first game. They got to Saints starting pitcher Ty Cook (JR/Highlands, Texas) early by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning Jorge Collazo Jr. singled to left to score Jose Diaz. The Saints would score another run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Midland's offense in the fifth and sixth inning proved to be too much for the Saints to handle. The Warriors won 8-2 to even the series 1-1.
The Saints bounced back after the loss in game two. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Saints scored four runs to lead 4-0. Ryan Chapa (JR/Corpus Christi, Texas), Robert Arrendondo, Jose Diaz and Xavier Solis (SR/Victoria, Texas) scored in the inning.
Midland scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Saints ended up winning 4-2. Jose Diaz picked up the save in another 1-2-3 inning. Starting pitcher Jonathan Jimenez (JR/Victoria, Texas) allowed two earned runs and struck out seven batters in 5.2 innings of work.
Midland took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Saints pitcher Triston Scherer (JR/Crosby, Texas) walked in a run and hit a batter to allow the other run.
Matt Mihalov (SR/Conroe, Texas) hit a double to score Jorge Collazo Jr. in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Warriors lead to 2-1. Andrew Ogletree tripled to center field to score Alec Martinez (JR/Corpus Christi, Texas) in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2.
Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to score John B. Ortega II (FR/Harlingen, Texas) in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. After scoring three unanswered runs, the Saints looked to Jose Diaz to close out the game. He threw another 1-2-3 inning for the third time in the series to give the Saints a 3-2 win and a 3-1 series victory. Diaz faced the minimum nine batters in his three saves this weekend.
The Saints head to Hobbs, N.M. to face University of the Southwest in the first Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) series of the season. It will be a three-game series from Feb. 28-29.
