ALEXANDRIA, LA. (March 7, 2020) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball fell to LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 86-76 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament championship game. The loss snaps the Saints 14 game winning streak, which began after LSUS defeated the Saints in January. OLLU is 26-6 on the season and the Pilots are 23-7.
Head Coach Stacy Stephens commented, "Hats off to LSU-Shreveport, they played hard the entire game and made plays and free throws when it counted. I think our players will use this game to grow and remember how we got to where we are and what we need to work on going forward. I believe we can use this loss to continue to get better and prepare for our next opportunity to step on the court and play as a team."
The Saints are 16-13 against the Pilots and won the previous matchup 105-103 in February.
The Pilots led by four points after the first quarter. LSUS shot over 50 percent from the field and the Saints turned the ball over seven times. The Saints caught up in the second quarter and went into halftime tied 38-38. Both teams turned the ball over nine times and Keviona Barber (JR/Chicago, Ill.) led the Saints in scoring with eight points.
The score was tied three different times in the third quarter and the Saints went into the fourth quarter up by two points. Dezeree White (SO/Houston, Texas) led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds. The game was tied 63-63 with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Pilots went on a run in the last five minutes of the game and won 86-76. With the win the Pilots earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
White and Sarah Mgbeike (JR/Richmond, Texas) led the Saints in scoring with 14 points each. Mgbeike led the team with 13 rebounds to earn a double-double. Lena Wilson (SR/Converse, Texas) led the Saints with four assists.
LSUS was led by DeAuja Thompson with 20 points. Thompson led the Pilots with 10 rebounds to secure a double-double. Taylor Jacob led the Pilots with six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 21-of-61 shooting for 34.4 percent, 2-of-17 from three-point range for 11.8 percent and 32-of-35 from the free-throw line for 91.4 percent. LSUS shot 29-of-66 for 43.9 percent, 6-of-16 three pointers for 37.5 percent and 22-of-30 from the free-throw line for 73.3 percent.
Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds. Both programs also committed 19 turnovers.
The Saints compete in the NAIA National Tournament starting on March 18 in Billings, Mont.
