SAN ANTONIO (March 7, 2020) – The Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) University Saints baseball team swept the three-game series against Texas College (TC) this weekend. The Saints won 10-2 in nine innings, 2-1 in seven innings and 10-5 in nine innings in the series finale. OLLU improves to 15-10 overall and 5-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Steers drop to 11-15 overall and 1-5 in conference.
Game One
Logan Garza (JR/Round Rock, Texas) set the Saints single game strikeout record with 17 against the Steers in the first game. He allowed only one hit and one walk. Mick Hernandez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) pitched the top of the ninth inning to close the game out.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Saints scored three runs in the inning, with one coming from an error. The other two runs were drove in by Jose Diaz (SR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) when he hit a double to right field.
The Saints scored at least one run in each of the next three innings, including four runs in the seventh inning, and won 10-2. The Steers committed five errors and struck out 18 times. Diaz tallied three RBIs and Tyler Vivier (FR/San Antonio, Texas) recorded two.
Game Two
The second game of the series was a pitcher's battle. The Steers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Saints responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs, which would eventually be the game winning runs as OLLU won 2-1. Robert Arrendondo scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game and Jacob Montejano (SO/San Antonio, Texas) scored on the same play. Jonathan Jimenez (JR/Victoria, Texas) pitched six innings allowing one earned run and striking out ten batters.
Jose Diaz picked up the save in the bottom of the seventh inning. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
Game Three
The Saints bats came alive once again in the series finale. The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the third inning. The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the third, aided by a double from Jorge Collazo Jr. (JR/San Antonio, Texas)
OLLU added on another three runs in the next inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Steers committed two errors in the inning and Jacob Montejano doubled to score Jacob Mitchell (JR/Harker Heights, Texas ).
The Saints won 10-5 to complete the three-game sweep. Matthew Klar (SO/San Antonio, Texas) went 2-for-3 at the plate in his first game of the season and scored two runs. Saints starting pitcher Ty Cook (JR/Highlands, Texas) allowed two earned runs and struck out five batters. Triston Scherer (JR/Crosby, Texas) pitched the last three innings and struck out three batters while allowing two earned runs.
