SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 21, 2021) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team fell in a tight match against NCAA D3 Trinity University (TU) 3-1. The Saints drop to 7-3 overall while the Tigers improve to 10-1.
Head Coach Scott Mattera commented, "It might sound funny, and I don't want to sound like I'm satisfied with a loss, but I absolutely love how we played tonight. Trinity was preseason No. 1 in the country for NCAA D3 and they are a legitimate national championship contender. They punched us in the mouth early but what I loved was how we sped up our game, played like problem solvers, and just kept battling."
Mattera continued, "While everyone made big time plays tonight, the highlight for me was the bounce back Cassidy Haller (SO/Cibolo, Texas) had. She had a tough weekend and then came out today against a big-time opponent and was pretty unstoppable. Camila Ramirez (FR/El Paso, Texas) also showed so much maturity with her shot selection against a big block. Madelynn Strzelczyk (SO/Marion, Texas) set the back side especially well and that really helped us hang in."
The Saints are 3-7 against the Tigers in the all-time series.
OLLU traveled a short distance to face Trinity in a match that was previously postponed on Sept. 1. The Saints won all three matches last week and the Tigers had been near unstoppable with a 9-1 season start.
The Saints started the first set slow, but eventually battled back to narrow the Tigers lead. OLLU won six straight points after being down 15-8 and forced a Tigers timeout. After two attacking errors and a kill by Haller, the Saints were only down by one point. The Tigers regained momentum and took the first set 25-20.
The teams traded points in the second set and the Saints reduced the number of errors significantly. They tallied a .250 hitting percentage on 44 total attacks. Following a 17-17 tie, Haller and Sadie Ballesteros (JR/Atascosa, Texas) put in kills and Alyssa Gallardo (SR/San Antonio, Texas) added an ace. Ramirez won the final two points with kills and the Saints evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory.
The third set was another back-and-forth frame. The Tigers went up 18-14 after a 12-12 tie and the Saints took a timeout. Ramirez and Ballesteros tallied back-to-back kills yet again and Megan Montalvo (SO/San Antonio, Texas) served an ace to shrink Trinity's lead to one. Despite the Saints comeback effort, Trinity pulled away and won 25-19 with two aces to close the third set.
Trinity jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the fourth set and ended up tallying 18 kills to take the set and win the match. The Saints gave the Tigers all they could handle in the first three sets and didn't go down without a fight. Ramirez and Haller recorded double-digit kills and 11 Saints tallied at least one dig.
