SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 7, 2021) – Both the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team and the University of the Southwest (USW) recorded 15 shots each, but the Mustangs had the advantage as they defeated the Saints 2-1 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) match. The Saints move to improve to 4-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference, while USW improves to 5-4-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference
History
The Saints are 11-7 against the Mustangs. In their last matchup in the 2020 season, the Saints lost 2-3.
Basics
Barely into the start of the game, the Mustangs put a goal on the board, and a minute later, they scored again to take a quick 2-0 lead. About five minutes later, Juan Martin Chica (SR/Cali, Colombia) took a solo shot into the net to move the game to 2-1.
The first goal, scored by Millaivy Lopez, was on a pass from Jaosua Olivas. The following goal was one by Matthew Alvarado that found its way into the net from near midfield. Chica's goal was near the end of the first half and was unassisted. After that, both offenses and defenses shifted to high gear and took turns on each side of the field with equal amounts of shots. Gael Navarette started with a shot that went wide. The next two shots went wide, as well, from USW's Diego Vazquez and OLLU's Norberto Lira (SR/Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico). Carlos Beltran (SR/San Antonio, Texas) took a chance on a shot for the Saints, but it went high, and the first shot on goal occurred from Lopez that was saved by substitute Saints' keeper Joseph Baker (JR/Llantwit Major, Wales, U.K.).
Chica, Beltran and Pedro Tamez aggressively pushed through, but their shots could not find the back of the net. After some back and forth opportunities, the first half ended with a yellow card on USW's Joseph Medina and a red card on OLLU's Oluwatimileyin Talabi (JR/Abeokuta, Nigeria).
The Mustangs started their offense quickly in the second half with opportunities from Alvarado and Luis Calvillo. An OLLU and USW yellow card was shown, followed by a promising shot from Said Salas (FR/El Paso, Texas) that was saved by USW keeper Armando Pando.
The teams each had seven shots in the second half.
