SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 31, 2021) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team opened the 2021-2022 season with a 103-90 victory over Southwestern Christian University (SCU) on Saturday.
The Saints were 0-2 against SCU heading into Saturday's matchup.
The Eagles scored the first two points of the game, but the Saints never trailed after York Benjamin's layup for SCU. The Saints had a steady lead throughout most of the first half and went on a run late in the frame to lead 54-40 at halftime. Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) led the Saints with 14 points and Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) had five rebounds. The Saints shot 45.9 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three-point line and hit 14-of-15 free throws.
The Saints continued to play well in the second half. The Eagles wouldn't go down without a fight, and dwindled the Saints lead to only seven points with 3:15 remaining. The Saints were able to force fouls and shot an impressive 90 percent from the free throw line throughout the game. Jordan Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. The Saints started the season strong with a 103-89 win.
Anderson led the Saints with 21 points, followed by Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) and Monzon with 16 each. Embry tallied a team-high 10 rebounds. Anderson and Embry led the Saints with two assists each.
Luiz Machado Jr. led the Jaguars with 38 points. Khristien White and York Benjamin led the team with eight rebounds each. Machado Jr. tallied a team-high four assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 33-of-68 shooting for 48.5 percent, 10-of-26 from three-point range for 38.5 percent and 27-of-30 from the free-throw line for 90 percent. Southwestern Christian shot 28-of-57 for 49.1 percent, 6-of-17 three pointers for 35.3 percent and 28-of-38 from the free-throw line for 73.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 41 rebounds while the Eagles collected 28. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 12.
The Saints travel to play Arkansas Baptist College on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
