PLAINVIEW, TEXAS (Nov. 13, 2021) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team dropped a nonconference game to Wayland Baptist University (WBU) today 56-78.
In 11 matchups, the Saints have won four games. The last time the two teams met was in 2019, when the Saints lost 79-87.
The Saints started strong, but as the first period continued, the Flying Queens went up by double digits to end with a 22-12 advantage. The Saints were able to fight through the second quarter to get to under 10 with a little more than two minutes left in the half at 24-32, but the Flying Queens continued to dominate to head to the locker room with a 37-26 lead.
After the 14-15 second quarter, the third did not go so well for the Saints as they were outscored 25-13. The Flying Queens had their first 20+ lead at the seventh minute as they went up by 23 points to close out the third.
The Saints had a successful fourth quarter scoring 17 points, while the Flying Queens marked 16. After Wayland took a game-high 26-point lead with less than six minutes remaining in the game, the Saints kept up a valiant effort to stay competitive.
Emiko Hemphill and Natalia Trevino led the Saints with 12 points each. Hemphill went 5-for-8 from the field and made two-of-two free throws. Trevino shot 5-of-14 from the field and 2-of-6 from three. Miranda Villegas added 11 points, while Makayla White scored 10 points.
WBU's Jenna Cooper led her team with 22 points, and teammate Kaylee Edgemom scored 16.
Gabrielle Guzman had two assists, while Trevino and Villegas had three steals each. Haleen Harris marked two blocks. Hemphill led the Saints in rebounds with nine. The team drew nine steals and eight assists, plus four blocks and 37 rebounds. They forced 19 turnovers.
WBU's Cooper added six assists, and Fapou Semebene recorded four steals. Cooper and Semebene had six rebounds each. The team marked 22 assists and 16 assists, plus four blocks and 38 rebounds. They forced 29 turnovers.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 21-of-57 shooting for 36.8 percent, 5-of-23 from three-point range for 21.7 percent and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line for 90 percent.
The Flying Queens combined for 28-of-64 from the field for 43.8 percent, 9-of-23 three-pointers for 39.1 percent and 13-of-20 from the charity stripe for 65 percent.
The Saints travel to Helena, Mont., next for a game against Carroll College on Nov. 17.
