GREAT FALLS, MONT. (Nov. 19, 2021) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team battled but lost a close game 80-73 to University of Providence (UP) on Friday. The Saints drop to 1-6 overall and the Argonauts improve to 9-2.
Assistant Coach Tommy Turgeon said, "The energy and effort from our team today was phenomenal. We achieved 22 assists by playing team basketball. Emiko Hemphill (SR/San Antonio, Texas) was a spark for us by getting after rebounds en route to her second double-double of the season. I couldn't be prouder of Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) for the leadership she brings to our team. We grow every day, and we are excited to move forward knowing we compete with the best teams in the country."
The Saints won the only previous meeting between the two programs in 2017.
The first half was evenly played by both teams. The Saints shot 44.4 percent from the field in the first quarter and Hemphill had already tallied six rebounds. OLLU started the first quarter strong by leading 10-2, but an 11-point run by Providence later in the frame gave them the lead. Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) opened the second quarter with back-to-back three-point shots, and the Saints used that momentum to lead up until two minutes remaining. The Argonauts took a 35-33 lead into halftime.
The third quarter featured multiple lead changes. Providence capitalized on second chance points, but the Saints tallied five steals. The game was tied 53-53 heading into the final frame. The Argonauts won the fourth quarter battle 27-20 despite the Saints grabbing seven offensive rebounds. Following a 63-63 tie with just over six minutes remining, Providence took a nine-point lead and never let the Saints back in the game.
