GREAT FALLS, MONT. (Nov. 19, 2021) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost a thrilling game 88-87 against University of Providence (UP) on Friday. The Saints fall to 4-2 while the Argonauts jump to 3-2.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We waited too long to start playing the way we should be playing. Hats off to an undersized Providence team. We have a long way to go and are looking at another quick turnaround. Hopefully we can respond positively and manufacture a better game."
The Saints won the only meeting between the programs 84-74 in 2017.
There were three ties and both teams shot over 40 percent from the three-point line in the first half. Providence's Marcus Stephens and Dawson Fowler both tallied double-digit points. Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) hit a three-point shot with under 10 minutes left in the first frame to shrink the Argonauts lead to three. Providence would answer quickly and led by 10 at halftime.
The Saints made tremendous halftime adjustments and outscored the Argonauts 48-39 in the second half. Tommie Law (FR/Semmes, Ala.) converted on a layup and Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) hit a pair of free throws with just under five minutes left in the game to trail by four. Jonathan Sanchez (SR/McAllen, Texas) followed with a layup and the Saints were within two points. Providence used steady shooting and forced a turnover to take back control of the game. The Saints didn't back down and trailed by three points with under 20 seconds left. The Argonauts hit 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch, and after a Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) three-pointer in the final second the Saints ended up losing by one point.
Anderson led the Saints with 24 points, followed by Monzon with 12. Monzon tallied a team-high eight rebounds. Georges Darwiche (SR/Bucharest, Romania) led the Saints with four assists.
Marcus Stephens led Providence with 23 points. Jake Olsen grabbed 11 rebounds along with 13 points for a double-double. Three Argonauts players tallied five assists each.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 32-of-73 shooting for 43.8 percent, 9-of-29 from three-point range for 31 percent and 14-of-16 from the free-throw line for 87.5 percent. Providence shot 28-of-58 for 48.3 percent, 8-of-20 three pointers for 40 percent and 24-of-30 from the free-throw line for 80 percent.
The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while the Argonauts collected 31. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 17.
The Saints travel to Havre, Mont., to face Montana State University-Northern tomorrow at 8:30 p.m.
