HAVRE, MONT. (Nov. 20, 2021) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Montana State University-Northern (MSUN) 63-57 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 2-6 overall and the Skylights drop to 3-4.
Assistant Coach Tommy Turgeon commented, "Our team fought with everything they had left on game five of this eight-day road trip after playing four ranked teams. I'm so proud of the character this team has. Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) did an incredible job of being our floor general and scoring 30 points. Emiko Hemphill (SR/San Antonio, Texas) grabbing 17 rebounds was extraordinary and really kept us in the game. Makayla White (JR/Midwest City, Okla.)'s defense and strength in the post was spectacular. Our team worked together and earned this win for each other."
The Saints lost the only previous meeting between the two schools in 2017.
The Saints bounced back after a four-game losing streak to beat MSUN. OLLU started slow in the first quarter by shooting 33.3 percent from the field. They quickly fixed the mistakes and scored 22 points in the second frame. OLLU scored seven of the final nine points before halftime and led 35-30.
OLLU held a steady lead in the third quarter backed by 11 points from Barber and four rebounds by Hemphill. After leading by nine points to start the fourth quarter, Barber hit a three-pointer to give the Saints a 12-point advantage. The Skylights found their groove and diminished the Saints lead to four points with under three minutes remaining. White, Cormia Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) and Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) hit key free throws down the stretch and the Saints won 63-57 to close their Montana road trip.
Barber led the Saints with a career-high 30 points. Hemphill broke her career rebounding record set yesterday with 17 tonight. Trevino had a team-high five assists.
MSUN was led by Peyton Kehr with 22 points. Sydney Hovde grabbed 15 rebounds. L'Tia Lawrence led the Skylights with six assists.
