SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 1, 2021) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to NCAA D1 University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) 93-66 on Wednesday. The Saints drop to 4-5 overall and the Cardinals move to 1-7.
Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "This was a disappointing effort overall for us. We have a lot of work to do, and the sense of urgency needs to set in soon. Our goal was to play a tough schedule heading into Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. We need to get better and get back to doing the small things right."
History
The Saints were 1-2 against the Cardinals prior to this game.
Basics
The Saints stuck with the Cardinals early in the first half. Georges Darwiche (SR/Bucharest, Romania) hit a three-pointer to tie the game 9-9 after the first few minutes. Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) followed with a three-pointer of his own to give the Saints a 12-9 lead. OLLU continued to score on a regular basis and led 20-16 with 10 minutes left in the first frame. UIW led 48-39 at halftime despite the Saints shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from the three-point line. Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) had a team-high 20 points and shot 4-for-5 from the field.
The Cardinals picked up the pace in the second half. They held the Saints to 39.2 percent shooting from the field. OLLU struggled with 16 total turnovers and went 0-for-7 on three-pointers in the second half. UIW ran up the score late in the game and won 93-66.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Anderson led the team with 20 points, followed by Jones with 11. Anderson Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) and Cedric Cook (FR/Houston, Texas) grabbed four rebounds each. Six different Saints tallied one assist each.
UIW was led by Benjamin Griscti with 30 points. Johnny Hughes III led the team with 15 rebounds and added 16 points for a double-double. Drew Lutz contributed a team high five assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 23-of-57 shooting for 40.4 percent, 5-of-20 from three-point range for 25 percent and 15-of-19 from the free-throw line for 78.9 percent.
UIW combined for 36-of-61 from the field for 59 percent, 10-of-21 three-pointers for 47.6 percent and 11-of-21 from the charity stripe for 52.4 percent.
The Saints grabbed 29 rebounds while the Cardinals gathered 38. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 16.
