PINEVILLE, LA. (Jan. 6, 2022) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team defeated Louisiana Christian University (LCU) 76-63 on Thursday night. The Saints improve to 5-10 overall and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Wildcats drop to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Head Coach Jillian Flores Bennett commented, "I'm very proud of our collective team effort tonight. Our main goal was to own the paint and win the battle of the boards, and we did that. This was a great team win after being off for two weeks. Makayla White (JR/Midwest City, Okla.) was unstoppable inside going 4-for-5 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds. Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) led on the stat line and stepped up and hit some big shots for us late."
This was the first meeting between the two programs.
The Saints started strong in the first game of 2022. They shot 46.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range in the first quarter. Alexandra Strawhorn (SR/Kyneton, Australia) tallied nine points and Cormia Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) had three rebounds. The Wildcats had similar numbers in the second quarter and dwindled the Saints lead to 37-34 at halftime.
The third quarter was evenly played, but both teams struggled shooting from the field. The Saints shot 33.3 percent but maintained a 51-46 lead heading into the final frame. The Wildcats came within one point of the lead multiple times in the fourth quarter, but the Saints never let the advantage slip. With just over three minutes remaining and a two-point lead, the Saints went on an eight-point run and ended up winning by 13 points. Four Saints players finished with double-digit scoring.
Keviona Barber led the Saints with 22 points, followed by Strawhorn and Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) with 12 points each. Emiko Hemphill (SR/San Antonio, Texas) totaled 12 rebounds for OLLU. Barber recorded a team-high four assists.
LCU was led by Kieyoomia Benally with 15 points. Miya McKinney had a team-high 10 rebounds and added 10 points for a double-double. Benally led the Wildcats with five assists.
