PINEVILLE, LA. (Jan. 6, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost a close game against Louisiana Christian University (LCU) 87-81 on Thursday. The Saints drop to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Wildcats jump to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in conference competition.
Head Coach Chris Dial said, "We were happy to have an opportunity to compete. LCU did a good job of protecting their home floor tonight. Missed free throws and missed opportunities hurt us. We look forward to getting a short practice in tomorrow and facing Xavier on Saturday."
This was the first matchup between the two schools.
The Saints put on an impressive performance in the first half. They shot 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range. Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) scored 15 points and Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) added 10. Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) and Jonathan Sanchez (SR/McAllen, Texas) both had five rebounds and OLLU led 45-41 at halftime. The Wildcats were perfect from the free-throw line in the first half, and they grabbed 20 rebounds.
The second half was very competitive, but the Wildcats pulled away late to secure the victory. LCU had a four-point lead with just under two minutes remaining following multiple ties. Jones hit a three-point shot to bring the Saints within one, but Jordan Adebutu answered with a three-point bucket as well. The Saints were forced to foul, and the Wildcats hit enough free-throws to win 87-81. The difference in the game was at the free-throw line. LCU earned 33 attempts while the Saints hit 12-of-23 for 52.2 percent.
Anderson and Jones led the team with 18 points each. Sanchez had a team-high eight rebounds. Anderson led the Saints with six assists.
LCU was led by Kae'ron Baker with 19 points. Baker and KJ Bilbo led the Wildcats with nine rebounds each. Ferontay Banks contributed a team high six assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 30-of-64 shooting for 46.9 percent, 9-of-22 from three-point range for 40.9 percent and 12-of-23 from the free-throw line for 52.2 percent.
LCU combined for 27-of-67 from the field for 40.3 percent, 8-of-21 three-pointers for 38.1 percent and 25-of-33 from the charity stripe for 75.8 percent.
The Saints grabbed 39 rebounds while the Wildcats gathered 43. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 16.
The Saints play Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans on Saturday at 4 p.m.
