NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 8, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team lost to No. 15-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 72-59 on Saturday. The Saints drop to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Rush improve to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Head Coach Chris Dial commented, "The team competed, and Xavier is a very good basketball team, which means we had a small margin of error. Free throws continue to plague us. We are looking forward to returning home and getting some practices under our belt."
History
This was the first matchup between the two programs.
Basics
The Saints struggled shooting on Saturday afternoon against a talented XULA squad. Despite the inconsistency, OLLU was down by only one point at halftime. The Saints never trailed in the first half until Nigel Allen hit a three-point shot at the buzzer for the Gold Rush. Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) and Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) had a strong first half for the Saints.
The Gold Rush continued to shoot well in the second half and finished with 75 percent shooting from three-point range. The Saints committed nine turnovers allowed XULA to take advantage halfway through the second half. OLLU has lost three straight games and will look for the first conference win against Paul Quinn College on Jan. 13.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Anderson led the team with 15 points. Monzon and Jonathan Sanchez (SR/McAllen, Texas) had a team-high six rebounds each. Georges Darwiche (SR/Bucharest, Romania) led the Saints with five assists.
