SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 13, 2022) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's basketball team won its third straight game by defeating Paul Quinn College (PQC) 76-73. The Saints improve to 7-10 overall and remain undefeated in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) at 4-0. The Lady Tigers drop to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the RRAC.
History
The Saints were 19-1 in the all-time series against PQC prior to this game.
Basics
The Saints stayed undefeated in the RRAC with a nail-biting win over PQC on Thursday night. OLLU opened the game by shooting 41.2 percent from the field in the first quarter and Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) had six points and three rebounds. The Lady Tigers fought back in the second quarter and hit 9-of-13 shots from the field. The Saints had a slight 38-36 advantage at halftime backed by 19 points from Trevino. Keviona Barber (SR/Chicago, Ill.) added four assists and OLLU forced nine turnovers.
The third quarter was back-and-forth, but the Saints outscored the Lady Tigers 16-11. The Saints led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter, but Paul Quinn slowly crept back into the game and cut OLLU's advantage to three points with just under two minutes remaining. Symone Carmenar hit a layup for the Lady Tigers with 21 seconds left to reduce the Saints' lead to just one point. Paul Quinn was forced to foul and the Saints stayed disciplined from the free-throw line to win 76-73.
Offensive/defensive standouts
Trevino led the Saints with a season-high 23 points. Tiffany Lopez (JR/San Antonio, Texas) had a team-high 10 rebounds. Barber recorded a career-high 10 assists and added 19 points for a double-double.
PQC was led by Carmenar with 22 points. Carmenar also had a team-high 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Jade Butler led the Lady Tigers with three assists.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 25-of-65 shooting for 38.5 percent, 7-of-25 from three-point range for 28 percent and 19-of-30 from the free-throw line for 63.3 percent. PQC shot 31-of-63 for 49.2 percent, 4-of-14 three-pointers for 28.6 percent and 7-of-18 from the free-throw line for 38.9 percent.
The Saints grabbed 43 rebounds while the Lady Tigers collected 40. OLLU forced 13 turnovers and committed 12.
