SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 13, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team fell to Paul Quinn College (PQC) 83-77 on Thursday. The Saints move to 5-9 overall and 0-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Tigers stay undefeated at 14-0 overall and 4-0 in conference contests.
The Saints were 20-2 against the Tigers prior to this matchup.
The Saints have dropped four straight games after losing to Paul Quinn on Thursday night. OLLU excelled in the first half by shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 57.1 from three-point range. They limited the Tigers to only one three-point shot and led the entire first half until one second remaining before halftime. Ja'Mare Redus hit a jump shot for the Tigers to head to the locker room tied 39-39. Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas) tallied 14 points in the first half for the Saints and Jordan Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) added five rebounds.
The second half was very competitive, but the Saints struggled with foul trouble late in the frame. Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.), Oscar Maldonado (JR/Greeley, Colo.) and Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) all fouled out for OLLU. Paul Quinn led by a few points for a majority of the second half, but the Saints tied the game 67-67 with just over five minutes left. The Tigers started scoring at will and quickly led by 10 points with only 1:30 remaining. Paul Quinn hung on to win 83-77 while the Saints are still searching for the first conference win of the season.
Anderson led the Saints in all three major categories with 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
PQC was led by Redus and Trevoin Shaw with 17 points each. Ja'mere Redus led the Tigers with seven rebounds. Three Tigers players contributed a team-high three assists apiece.
Inside the box
OLLU combined for 26-of-49 shooting for 53.1 percent, 6-of-14 from three-point range for 42.9 percent and 19-of-30 from the free-throw line for 63.3 percent.
PQC combined for 29-of-59 from the field for 49.2 percent, 3-of-10 three-pointers for 30 percent and 22-of-41 from the charity stripe for 53.7 percent.
The Saints grabbed 37 rebounds while the Tigers gathered 33. OLLU forced 11 turnovers and committed 16.
The Saints take on the University of the Southwest at home on Saturday at 4 p.m.
