SAN ANTONIO (May 9, 2022) – The No. 1-seed Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team fell to No. 2-seed Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) in the final two games of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament on Monday. The Eagles were crowned conference champions, while the Saints earn a spot in the NAIA National Softball Opening Round based on their top overall conference record and regular season championship.
History
The Saints were 6-7 against the Eagles prior to the games.
Game One, 1-3
The Eagles bats came alive immediately in the first inning. They scored three runs on three hits and would lead the remainder of the game. The Saints lone run came in the fourth inning when Julissa Moreno (JR/Austin, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to score Cassandra Valdez (JR/Brownsville, Texas). The Saints battled every inning with seven total runners left on base, but Texarkana forced a deciding game to determine the tournament champion.
Valdez started in the circle for the Saints and suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs. Angela Ramirez (SR/Converse, Texas) entered the game in the first inning and pitched five innings. She struck out three batters and didn't allow a run. Ciera Martinez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) pitched in the sixth inning with one strikeout. Valdez and Terrazas both had a multi-hit game.
Game Two, 1-6
Texarkana jumped on the Saints early in game two as well. They started the scoring with a two-run home run over the left field fence in the second inning. They added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI ground out and three more runs in the sixth inning. Valdez singled to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring home Kayla Dreese (SR/San Antonio, Texas). The Eagles won 6-1 backed by nine hits.
Martinez suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs. Valdez took over in the circle in the second inning and gave up three earned runs in just over four innings of work. Six different Saints tallied a hit.
Up next
The Saints will play in the NAIA National Softball Opening Round starting on May 16.
