GULF SHORES, ALA. (May 16, 2022) – The No. 3-seed Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) softball team lost 5-3 versus No. 2-seed College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA) in the Gulf Shores Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round on Monday. OLLU drops to 44-12 on the season and Coastal Georgia improves to 39-12. The Mariners finished the regular season as the NAIA's No. 16 team while the Saints followed at No. 17.
Head Coach Bruce Lenington commented, "The slow start doomed us today. I was very happy with our swings in the last three innings, so hopefully that will lead to some good things tomorrow."
History
This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Basics
The Mariners' offense clicked immediately in the first inning. They doubled with one out to take an early 1-0 lead. Coastal Georgia held the Saints scoreless in the next three innings and added four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Both runs scored were unearned due to two errors in the frame. Rebecca Duran (SR/Austin, Texas) put down a sacrifice bunt that moved Katelyn Esparza (JR/San Antonio, Texas) to third base and Joanna Gonzalez (SR/San Benito, Texas) to second base. Madison Nunn (SR/Cibolo, Texas) reached on an error by the second baseman, and Esparza and Gonzalez both scored.
Ariel Montgomery (SR/Castroville, Texas) dwindled the Mariners' lead to only two runs in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence. The Saints entered the seventh inning with one last chance to tie or take the lead. Marissa Bradley (SO/Seguin, Texas) pinch-hit and singled down the right-field line with one out. Kristee Salas (JR/Edinburg, Texas) and Nunn both followed with flyouts, and the Saints fell 5-3. Cassandra Valdez (JR/Brownsville, Texas) suffered the loss after starting in the circle for 3.1 innings with five earned runs and three strikeouts. Angela Ramirez (SR/Converse, Texas) and Ciera Martinez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) pitched in relief and didn't allow a run. Valdez, Montgomery, Bradley and Eneli Garza (SO/La Feria, Texas) all tallied a hit.
