Alan E. Baxter has completed his fifth year as head coach for the golf team at Our Lady of the Lake University.
Baxter is a graduate of St. Mary's University, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance in 1986 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1989. At St. Mary's, he was the president of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, from 1985-1986. From 1983-1986, Baxter was on the varsity golf team. He lettered for three years and was captain for two years. He also received the most valuable player award twice.
In the 2018 season, the Saints captured the Golden State Athletic Conference/Association for Independent Institutions (A.I.I.)/Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) tournament in Arizona. The Saints prevailed over 18 teams to capture the title. They were led by All-Conference recipients Kane Ybarra, Louis Flynn, Stevan Hinojosa and Steve Landry, who was named conference newcomer of the year. Baxter was named the overall and conference coach of the year. In the national tournament, the Saints were led by Jauregui, who qualified as an individual to advance to the final round of the national tournament.
In the 2017 season, the Saints captured the RRAC Tournament Championship for the third straight year. The Saints tallied a two-day even 864 to capture the title. Christopher Schriedel was the individual champion after shooting an even 216. He was followed by Gerardo Daniel, Kane Ybarra and Stevan Hinojosa -- all four earned All-Conference honors. Ybarra was named the conference's Player of the Year as well as Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.
The team earned their third NAIA Scholar Team award, and Schriedel was named NAIA Scholar Athlete. Earning RRAC Scholar Athlete recognition were Alan Crosswell-Karam, Jeremy Gordon, Jonah Guajardo, Omar Ramirez, Merrick Ramos, David Ray, Schriedel and Ybarra.
Ybarra was named to the NAIA All-American Second Team and Baxter received his third consecutive Coach of the Year award.
Throughout the season, the Saints were ranked first in the conference all seven weeks. On Nov. 4, they debuted in 16th place in the NAIA poll and improved to 12th, 10th and eighth. They finished the season ranked 15th in the nation.
In the 2016 season, the Saints captured the RRAC Tournament Championship for the second straight year. The Saints posted a two-day 900 at the Waterchase Golf Club. They finished ahead of the University of St. Thomas, the University of Houston-Victoria and the University of the Southwest. The Saints participated in a combined tournament with teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Rafael Jauregui (68-70-80) and Francisco Gonzalez (74-72-72) led the team with a 218. They both earned a share of the tournament individual title and were named to the 2016 RRAC Men's Golf All-Conference Team. In addition, Baxter received his second RRAC Coach of the Year award.
In 2015, the Saints claimed its first-ever RRAC Tournament Championship after shooting the lowest round of the day at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. The Saints finished with a two-day 887 ahead of both University of Texas at Brownsville and University of St. Thomas who finished with scores of 891 and 893. The tournament combined both Sooner Athletic Conference and RRAC teams.
Additionally, Ian Berrigan, Christopher Schriedel and Tommy Xu were selected to the RRAC Men's Golf All-Conference Team and Baxter was named RRAC Coach of the Year.
During Baxter's first year as coach for the Saints, the team played in seven tournaments -- three in the fall and four in the spring. The team hosted the Men's Golf Red River and Unaffiliated Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Olympia Hills Golf Course. The Saints finished fifth out of six teams.
Baxter is CEO and President of DBGIC Management, LLC. and FAR Music, LLC. Here he negotiates contracts, promotes, markets, consults and manages recording artists, entertainers, models, actors, professional athletes, coaches, athletic and entertainment events, sponsorships and naming rights for facilities.
Baxter previously was a sports agent for various professional athletes, including golfers, basketball players, football players and baseball players.
His coaching experience includes coaching a 15-member team comprised of 16-18 year olds in the Big League Baseball League. He has also coached PGA tour golfers, including Rex Caldwell, Frank Conner and Esteban Toledo. He has been head coach with various professional basketball teams in Eastern and Western Europe. In addition, he owned the Barcelona Howlers, a professional football team. He was also its general manager and head coach for two years.
Arnie Martinez joined the OLLU golf staff during the 2013-2014 season as assistant coach. He assists with practice and tournament preparation. Martinez also manages player development.
This summer, Martinez qualified for the prestigious pro event - the Texas State Open and was awarded one of the three qualifying spots in the field.
In 2015, Martinez, along with then Saints golfer Ian Berrigan, competed in the Valero Texas Open Qualifier after making the cut in the Pre-Qualifier of the competition. Martinez was the only golf coach to make the cut. Martinez continues to assist with all facets of the program from recruiting to practice schedules and practices, tournament strategy, course management/strategy, implementing and overseeing physical conditioning. Martinez is also a touring professional golfer playing on several tours including the Adams Pro Tour, where he continues to improve to reach his goal of earning a PGA Tour card. Martinez was a standout collegiate player at Our Lady of the Lake University from 2008 to 2010. In 2013, he won the Greater San Antonio Men’s City Championship and was selected to play on the prestigious Rudy’s I35 Cup representing San Antonio.
Matt Beasley joined the coaching staff in 2018-2019 as a graduate assistant and will primarily handle strength and condition for the team.. He played two years on the Saints baseball team as a third baseman. In his last season, he was selected to the All-Conference Team.
Beasley is a native of Burleson, Texas. He received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in fall 2018.
