Saints Show Grit and Shine in Key Victories on Day One of Brother Al Invitational
San Antonio, Texas- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) women's tennis team faced a challenging opening day at the Brother Al Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's University, but showed moments of resilience and promise as the three-day event kicked off. The first day featured tough singles matches against strong opponents, with the Saints battling hard despite coming up short in most individual contests.
In singles, Carolina Guerrero fought against St. Mary's Selina Wu but fell 4-6, 2-6, while Marie Peters was narrowly defeated by Trinity University's Trinity Levy, dropping the match after a second-set surge that saw her take it 6-1. Ely Laure put in a determined effort against Gia Posito from St. Mary's but lost 6-2, 6-3. Anja Pisar struggled in her match against Andrea Landaeta, falling 0-6, 1-6, and Michaela Muller also lost to St. Mary's Isabella Olsson 3-6, 2-6.
Despite the tough singles results, the women's doubles pair of Marie Peters and Ely Laure found success, overpowering St. Mary's University 8-2. Their strong teamwork and communication on the court provided a bright spot for the Saints and a confident boost moving forward. In contrast, the doubles team of Anja Pisar and Carolina Guerrero fell to Trinity University 8-3, though they showed moments of promise throughout the match.
On the men's side, OLLU got off to a strong start in singles competition. Luis Jimenez Arzate dominated Ryan Santana from Texas Lutheran University with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Joao Victor Castro also earned a solid win against Barrett Spaar from Texas Lutheran, while Pietro Guimaraes cruised past his opponent Carney 6-0, 6-1. Paulo Ceolin secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over St. Mary's Evin Walsh. Caleb Olen faced a tough challenge against Bernhard Hauer and fell 6-0, 6-2.
Later matches saw Luis Jimenez Arzate engage in a hard-fought battle against Louie Hein from St. Mary's but ultimately fall in singles. Pietro Guimaraes also faced defeat in his second match against St. Mary's. Caleb Olen and Bastien Prod'homme both bounced back with wins over their St. Mary's opponents. Joao Santos defeated Texas Lutheran's Kadon Sullins, and Jacob Gailey secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory over a Texas Lutheran player.
While the first day presented its share of challenges, the OLLU men and women showed competitive fire and determination across the board. The women's doubles win and several strong men's singles performances highlighted the team's potential as they prepare for the next two days of the Brother Al Invitational.
