Softball Claims RRAC Championship Title
Pineville, LA– Our Lady of the Lake University delivered a composed and championship-caliber performance Monday, leaning on timely offense and the steady arm of Valeria Vielma to secure a 5-3 win over LSU Alexandria and claim the 2026 Red River Athletic Conference Softball Championship title.
The Saints path to the crown underscored both resilience and depth. Forced into an elimination scenario earlier in the day, OLLU responded with three consecutive victories—including back-to-back wins over the tournament's top seed—to capture the conference tournament championship.
The day began with a statement performance against Texas A&M–Texarkana. OLLU seized immediate control, erupting for seven runs across the first two innings. Tania Rodriguez and Novalee Gloria sparked the early surge, while Caitlin Casa's run-producing single capped a four-run first inning. Rodriguez continued to set the pace in the second with a two-run double, giving the Saints a commanding cushion they would not relinquish.
Momentum carried into the first matchup with LSUA, where the Saints flipped the narrative against a team that had dominated the tournament to that point. OLLU capitalized on early opportunities, forcing defensive miscues and turning them into runs. Aggressive baserunning and situational hitting allowed the Saints to build a significant lead, with contributions spread throughout the lineup.
Despite a game marked by errors on both sides, OLLU maintained control by consistently responding to LSUA's attempts to chip away. Annika Litterio's complete-game outing provided stability in the circle, while the Saints offense continued to apply pressure deep into the game to secure a 10-5 victory.
With the championship on the line in the decisive game, OLLU once again demonstrated poise. After falling behind 1-0, the Saints answered immediately with a pivotal inning fueled by opportunistic hitting and disciplined execution. Taking advantage of defensive lapses, OLLU strung together key at-bats to produce five runs.
From there, the Saints relied on controlled pitching and composed defense to withstand LSUA's late push. Vielma's complete-game performance, highlighted by five strikeouts, ensured the Saints maintained their edge and closed out the 5-3 win.
With the conference title secured, OLLU advances to the opening round of the NAIA Softball National Championship, scheduled for May 11–14 at campus sites nationwide. The tournament's final stage will take place at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia, later in May. LSUA, as the regular-season champion, will also continue into postseason play.
