Saints Baseball Bids Farewell to Bryan Aughney

SAN ANTONIO (July 29, 2022) – Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) has announced the resignation of baseball Head Coach Bryan Aughney. Aughney will head to Harlingen, Texas, to lead the Harlingen South High School baseball team. He will also take on administrative duties for the school district.

Athletic Director Shane Hurley commented, "Bryan has been an outstanding member of our athletic program. He improved all aspects of our baseball program and was instrumental in improving budgetary procedures for the department throughout the last five years. We will miss him, and our entire staff wishes him and his family the best as they relocate near relatives and pursue new endeavors."

Aughney said, "It's hard to put into words what OLLU and being a Saint meant to me. It's a great university with great people. I love each player current and past; that's what made the decision so hard. We have such great people in and associated with our program. I feel like we built a complete program in the five years I was there and that can only be accomplished with a good coaching staff and players willing to buy in."

"I'm thankful to Coach Hurley for allowing me to assist on the Athletic Director side of things the last couple of years as well," Aughney continued. "The future of Saints athletics is in great hands. I love each and every one of my players. The expectations are high for this upcoming season and the pieces are there. Coach Matt Piker did a great job addressing team needs recruiting-wise with good people. I'll be watching, and I look forward to the upcoming games in the future. I'm looking forward to being a Hawk, but I'll always be a Saint. Wings up!"

Aughney joined the Saints coaching staff in 2018 to become the third head coach in program history. During his time at the helm from 2018-2022, the Saints tallied a .718 Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) winning percentage. He accumulated more than 200 victories and led OLLU to its first NAIA World Series Opening Round appearance during the 2021 campaign.

Aughney's teams also had much success in academics. The team earned two consecutive American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Awards and five NAIA Scholar Team awards.

Prior to OLLU, Aughney served as head coach for Harlingen High School for five years. His teams made three trips to the UIL State Playoffs and amassed an overall mark of 73-64. Aughney was named Valley Morning Star Coach of the Year after his first season with the program.

Before Harlingen, Aughney found success as head coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville (now consolidated with the University of Texas-Pan American to form the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley). The Scorpions competed in the NAIA from 2008-2018 while Aughney was the head coach. The team qualified twice for the NAIA National Tournament. Aughney also was the conference's baseball chair, leading the rearrangement of the conference alignment and the dissolving of divisional play, conference schedule and operations procedures.

Before his 10-year tenure at Brownsville, Aughney was an assistant coach at Bellevue University (BU) and Northland College (NC) He helped lead BU to a Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference title in the NAIA during the 2006-2007 season.

Aughney played collegiate baseball at Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont. His team was the conference and region champions and qualified for the NJCAA D3 World Series. He also played for NC and helped his team reach the NAIA Regional Tournament. Aughney was a two-time all-conference selectee while playing for the Lumberjacks.

During his five years coaching at OLLU, the Saints set multiple individual and team records:

  • First-ever NAIA World Series Opening Round appearance
  • RRAC Regular Season Champions
  • Five NAIA Scholar Athletes
  • Two selections to NAIA All-American Team

  • .258 opponent batting average in 2019
  • Largest margin of victory in a single game (32 in 2022)
  • Ranked No. 21 in the NAIA in 2021

OLLU begins its ninth season in 2023 and will look to build on the legacy that Aughney and previous coaching staffs molded.
