Saints Plate 41 Runs in Sweep of Xavier

SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team swept Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) in a three-game series this weekend. The Saints improve to 26-18 overall and 17-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Gold Rush fall to 16-22 overall and 7-20 in RRAC play. The Saints have won six of their previous seven games.

History

The Saints were 3-1 against the Gold Rush prior to the series.

Game one

The Saints run-ruled the Gold Rush 17-3 in the first game of the series. The Saints totaled 14 runs and didn't commit any errors. The Gold Rush had 12 hits, but the Saints limited their runs. Diego Zuniga batted 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a double. Francisco Martinez totaled three RBIs and two Saints players had two RBIs each. Joshua Mendez earned the win on the mound by going 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Chase Dunn and Matthew Sanchez pitched in relief and didn't allow a hit. Tyler Vivier, Jackson Kalisky and Jimmy Valle all had a stolen base.

Game two

OLLU opened Saturday's action with a 14-1 victory. The Saints had five runs over the first five innings and put the game away in the sixth frame. They added nine runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Caimyn Holiday batted 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles. Kalisky also had a multi-RBI game. Alec Martinez started for the Saints and pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. Martinez gave up the lone run of the game in the seventh inning and moved to 6-2 on the season with the victory.

Game three

OLLU's offense didn't let up in the series finale. They posted another double-digit run total on 13 hits. Eight different players recorded at least one hit and Christian Martinez batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Christopher Perez earned his first victory on the mound with four strikeouts over five innings. Dunn, Devin Benavides and Pablo Montante all pitched in relief. The Saints showed steady plate discipline by walking nine times. The Saints won 10-2 and look to keep the momentum heading into the last series of the regular season next week.
