No. 6 Baseball Faces No. 1 LSU-Shreveport at RRAC Championship Tournament
SAN ANTONIO (May 4, 2024) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) baseball team will take on LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) in an elimination game at the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday. The Saints are the No. 6 seed and the Pilots are the No. 1 seed. Both teams are 1-1 at the tournament so far.
The Saints defeated No. 7 seed the University of the Southwest (USW) yesterday in an elimination game. The first inning had 21 total runs scored. The Saints scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning on five hits. Diego Zuniga and Kobey Allison homered in the frame, with Allison's being a grand slam. D'Artagnan Perez-Padron, Jack Kalisky, and Vincent Banda also picked up RBIs. The Mustangs responded with 11 runs on 10 hits. The Saints took the permanent lead in the second inning. Brett Atkinson and Caimyn Holiday hit RBI singles, while Zuniga and Banda also drove in runs. Southwest plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one. The Saints scored six runs over the next three innings and won 20-15. Allison finished with two grand slams and eight total RBIs, both of which tied OLLU single game records. Seven different OLLU players recorded at least one RBI. Jack Kalisky was the winning pitcher after going 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Noah De La Riva started on the mound and Ethan Garza, Chase Dunn, Hector Rogerio III and Donovan Gamez pitched in relief.
The Pilots lost to No. 5 seed Louisiana Christian University (LCU) on Friday. LSUS scored one run in the first inning and the lead held until the fourth frame. Tyler McKenna hit a solo home run for the Wildcats to tie the game 1-1. LSUS scored one run in the fifth inning, but the Wildcats responded with two in the bottom of the frame. The two runs in the fifth inning gave LCU the permanent lead. They also scored two runs in the eighth inning to win 5-2. The Pilots had one more hit than the Wildcats but finished with 10 runners left on base.
OLLU played Shreveport three times this season and were swept in the series. The Saints are 10-24 against the Pilots in the series history. The winner will move on to battle the winner of No. 4 seed LSU-Alexandria versus No. 3 seed the University of Houston-Victoria.
