OLLU Dance Featured in 'Say a Little Prayer' Film
SAN ANTONIO (June 20, 2024) - The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) dance team was featured in an upcoming movie, "Say a Little Prayer", that finished filming in 2022 and is publicly premiering soon. Head Coach Crystal Brock was the lead choreographer and Madison Smith was her assistant. Yasmine Escobar, Maya Jay and Madicela Perez were featured in multiple scenes.
The movie revolves around three girls saying a sacred prayer when looking for love, and they quickly learn to expect the unexpected. The film is based on Saint Anthony and in Latin culture it is a common practice to pray to him for lost items. Filming took place in October of 2022 throughout San Antonio and took two weeks. The directors, producers and writers of the film are famous for creating the movie "Selena". The Latino community made up 95 percent of the cast and crew for "Say a Little Prayer". Luis Fonsi was the lead actor and has won a grammy for writing the song "Despacito", which features popular Latino artist "Daddy Yankee". Vanessa Vasquez performed as the lead actress. The Houston native has been featured in multiple movies.
The other notable cast and crew members are Vivian Lamolli, Jackie Cruz and Edward James Olmos, and Patrick Perez Vidauri. Lamolli is a Disney actress, Cruz was in "Orange is the New Black", Olmos was th executive producer and played the role of Selena's dad in "Selena" and Vidauri was the director.
Brock recently returned from a trip in Los Angeles from May 29-June 2. The movie premiered on May 31 at the Latino International Film Festival at the Chinese Theatre. Escobar, Jay and Perez were featured in two scenes and their hats were designed by Michael Quintanilla. Quintanilla was chosen as the Grand Marshal at the 2024 Fiesta Flambeau Parade. Brock commented, "It's been a rewarding experience and a blessing to have a few OLLU spirit athletes dance on screen for such a beautiful film. I am proud for their work and how they represented OLLU, the city of San Antonio and our great state. I am beyond grateful for this amazing opportunity and can't wait for everyone to see this film." Brock's son Arty accompanied her to the premier and said, "It was a great experience walking the red carpet with my mom and seeing the movie for the first time before everyone else. I was fortunate to meet some great people in the movie business and see what happens at these events behind the scenes. It was awesome to see my mom's hard work and the OLLU dancers, especially Madison Smith, on the big screen."
