Saints Golf Primed for 2023 Spring Season
SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 7, 2023) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) golf programs are geared up for the 2023 spring season. The women's squad will begin its inaugural season in the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC). At the same time, the men look to build on a second-place finish in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Championship last season.
Staff
Head Coach Arnie Martinez returns for his fourth season at the helm. Tony Torres enters his fourth season as the assistant coach for the men's team, while Allison Trevino starts her second year assisting the women's side. Martinez said, "I've been very fortunate to have Tony and Allison on the staff. They know the game of golf and understand when to make the right moves."
Women's schedule
The women's team heads to Las Vegas from March 19-21 to compete in the Battle at the Primm. The Saints will host the CAC Championship at Golf Club of Texas here in San Antonio from April 30-May 2.
Men's schedule
The men start the season by competing in the TPC Shootout in San Antonio. The event will run from Feb. 19-21. The squad heads west to participate in the TMU Spring Invitational for the first time in program history. The competition goes from March 26-28 at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano, Calif. The RRAC Championship spans from April 16-18 at the Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas.
Paired events
The programs participate in the Claud Jacobs Invitational in Victoria, Texas, from Feb. 26-28. The only other paired event is the Schreiner Invitational, which runs from March 5-7 in Kerrville, Texas.
Newcomers
Erika Romero joins the Saints from Edinburg, Texas, as the lone newcomer for the women's team. Ozil Salinas and Victor Peña Cortés are new additions to the men's squad. Salinas is a local graduate of Taft High School, while Cortes hails from Malaga, Spain.
Returners
Alexis Calzada, Miliani Georges, Alahnna Limones and Annabelle Reyna return for their sophomore season. Joshua Brook, Oliver Gaisford and Brandon Lopez round out the second-year students for the men's side. Ceci Lattuada, Madelyn Miller and Christina Trujillo bring the most experience to the women's side as juniors. The women's squad does not feature any seniors. Lattuada took home the trophy in the Queen of the Hill Country Tournament last season.
Matthew Cantu is the only junior on the men's team. Sergio Garcia and Massimo Garcia enter their senior year, while Diego Garcia Hernandez returns as a graduate student. Hernandez posted a top-five finish at the RRAC Championship last year.
Fan expectations
The Saints feature multiple events in the San Antonio area throughout the season. Martinez commented, "We take great pride in integrity and honesty. You will see a high level of play, and hopefully, you will see the athletes taking care of business and executing."
