Averns Anchors Defense in Hard-Fought Match Against UIW

San Antonio, Texas- Despite the final scoreline, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team showed resilience and heart as they took on NCAA Division I opponent University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals in a hard-fought match Thursday night. While the Saints ultimately fell 2-0, the numbers don't tell the full story of a squad that refused to back down in the face of relentless pressure.

Goalkeeper Zak Averns was a standout force for the Saints, playing the full 90 minutes and racking up an impressive 9 saves against a barrage of 19 total shots from UIW—11 of which were on target. Averns' performance kept OLLU in contention, frustrating the Cardinals' attack and preventing what could have been a much wider margin. His calm presence in goal were crucial in withstanding UIW's nine corners and constant forward pressure.

Despite limited offensive opportunities, the Saints made the most of what they had. OLLU managed four shots, two of them on target, with Cade Ryan and Andres Rocha each notching a shot to challenge the UIW defense. While the Cardinals defense remained composed, they were tested and forced to make two saves, proving that the Saints weren't going down quietly.

The match's first goal came just past the 15-minute mark, when UIW's Diego Robles found the net off a well-placed assist from Giovanni Padilla. That early strike didn't break the Saints' spirit, however, as they continued to battle for possession and maintain a disciplined back line. It wasn't until the 63rd minute that UIW found their second and final goal of the night, courtesy of Emmanuel Martinez, who was set up by Andres Riera.

The Saints move to 1-2-1 on the season. OLLU look ahead to Sunday's matchup against Paul Quinn College at 3:30 PM CDT at home, where they'll aim to return to the win column.
