OLLU Men's Soccer Falls to Nelson University Despite Late Push
Waxahachie, Texas– The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team battled hard under the lights Saturday evening but came up short in a 3-1 loss to Nelson University (Texas). Despite a determined performance and a strong late-game effort, the Saints couldn't overcome a three-goal surge.
The first half remained tightly contested, with both teams exchanging early opportunities and maintaining an even tempo. However, Nelson managed to break through at the 26:46 mark with a well-placed finish that put the Saints on the back foot going into the break.
The real damage came in the opening minutes of the second half, when Nelson struck twice in quick succession—first at 47:31 and again at 48:30. The back-to-back goals stunned the Saints and created a difficult deficit to recover from. Still, OLLU refused to roll over.
Zak Averns stood tall in goal, playing all 90 minutes and registering three saves despite facing relentless pressure.
OLLU found their rhythm late in the match and were rewarded in the 77th minute when Oli White found the back of the net off a sharp assist from Cade Ryan. The goal was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating evening and gave the Saints a much-needed spark down the stretch. White's finish marked his continued impact on the attack, while Ryan's vision and timing set the tone for the Saints best offensive moment of the match.
Offensively, the Saints generated eight shots compared to Nelson's 13. While the shot total favored the home team, OLLU showed flashes of danger in the final third, particularly in the closing 20 minutes. Both teams finished with four corner kicks, underlining the balance in set-piece opportunities.
Nelson's goalkeeper was called into action for just two saves, while the Saints forced more frequent defensive responses throughout the match. Though the scoreboard may not show it, OLLU's attacking sequences, particularly after conceding the third goal, demonstrated their resilience and refusal to go quietly.
The result is a setback for the Saints. However, with conference play heating up, OLLU will look to regroup and build on the positives from tonight's match as they prepare for their next challenge.
