Second-Half Surge Lifts Xavier Over OLLU

San Antonio, Texas– Despite a tough 3-0 loss to Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA), the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's soccer team displayed unwavering heart and community spirit during Saturday's special Youth Pinkout Day match at the OLLU Soccer Field.

The Saints were met with a strong Xavier attack, as the visitors tallied 17 total shots and broke through OLLU's resilient defense in the second half. Zak Averns and Carson Burkhalter split time in goal, combining for six hard-earned saves against a high-pressure Gold Rush offense.

After a scoreless first half marked by tight defending and physical midfield play, Xavier finally broke the deadlock at the 66:41 mark. A penalty was awarded in the 83rd minute, which Xavier converted to double their lead. Just minutes later, at 86:37, the visitors added a third to seal the result.

OLLU struggled to find rhythm in the attacking third, registering only three shots on the day, and were unable to earn a corner kick. Still, the Saints showed flashes of promise and grit, particularly in the back line and goalkeeping. Averns and Burkhalter stood tall in the net, making key stops that kept the game within reach until the late stages.

But beyond the scoreboard, the day was about more than just the game.

As part of Youth Pinkout Day, held to raise awareness for breast cancer and to celebrate local youth athletes, the Saints welcomed a lively crowd of young fans and families. After the final whistle, OLLU players took time to sign autographs, take photos, and engage with kids from the community, a moment that reminded everyone of the deeper purpose behind sport.

Though the loss was a tough pill to swallow, the day was filled with memorable moments off the pitch, reinforcing OLLU's commitment to excellence, both in competition and in the community.

The Saints will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue conference play.
