Saints Split Tough Tournament Opener in Gulf Shores
Gulf Shores, AL- Our Lady of the Lake University softball team opened day one of the Gulf Shores tournament with a competitive split, demonstrating resilience and offensive capability against nationally recognized opponents.
In the first game, the Saints fell 2-1 to ranked Mobile in a close contest. Mobile scored early with a run in the second inning and added another in the fourth, while OLLU's offense responded in the fifth when Arianna Alejandro singled to drive in Yezenia Perez. Despite generating opportunities, the Saints were unable to mount a comeback. Annika Litterio pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on 11 hits, and Valeria Vielma closed the final 1.1 innings, striking out two in relief. The game highlighted OLLU's poise in a tight matchup and their ability to create scoring opportunities against a strong opponent.
Later in the day, the Saints rebounded offensively in a high-scoring contest against Freed-Hardeman, producing nine runs on nine hits. Alejandro led the charge with a triple and two RBIs, while Boston Tijernia, Marisa Rosales, Novalee Gloria, Yezenia Perez, and Caitlin Casas all contributed key RBIs. The team executed aggressive baserunning, including multiple stolen bases, and consistently applied pressure throughout the game. Despite their offensive output, the Saints came up just short, falling 9-8. Valeria Vielma allowed four runs over 2.1 innings before Litterio pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep OLLU within striking distance.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow against Southeastern and William Carey.
