OLLU Edged Late by Southwestern Christian in One-Point Heartbreaker
Waxahacie, Texas- Our Lady of the Lake women's basketball fought hard but came up just short in a heartbreaker, falling 57–56 to Southwestern Christian University in a tightly contested game that went down to the final possession. The Saints showed resilience and control through much of the night, leading for large stretches before SCU managed to edge ahead in the closing seconds.
From the opening tip, it was clear this would be a battle of determination and grit. The first quarter ended deadlocked at 17–17, with both teams trading defensive stops and timely shots. In the second, the Saints found their rhythm, outscoring SCU 11–10 to take a narrow halftime advantage. OLLU's defense held firm, forcing turnovers and limiting SCU's looks inside.
Coming out of halftime, the Saints looked poised to put the game away. They controlled the tempo in the third quarter, outscoring SCU 17–14 behind strong interior play and efficient shooting. But in the fourth, momentum began to shift as SCU managed to find a late spark, outscoring OLLU 16–11 in a comeback effort that just barely overtook the Saints lead in the final minutes.
Despite the outcome, OLLU had several standout performances. Samantha Fields led the team with 20 points, providing energy on both ends of the floor and leading the defensive charge with 4 steals. Alexandra Westerdijk Martin anchored the team in the paint, pulling down 9 rebounds to keep the Saints even on the boards. Shayla Dede and Evangeline Hernandez each contributed 2 assists, helping facilitate a balanced offense that shot 41.7% from the field.
Statistically, the game could not have been closer. Both teams grabbed 27 rebounds and stayed aggressive until the final buzzer. The Saints created chances and maintained defensive intensity throughout, but a few missed opportunities late proved costly in a game defined by small margins.
Though the final score didn't fall their way, the Saints fight and composure were evident from start to finish. OLLU will be back in action against Nelson (TX) at 4:00 PM CDT on Saturday.
