OLLU Falls Despite Strong Effort Against Trailblazers

San Antonio, Texas- The Our Lady of the Lake University women's basketball team fell 73–63 to UNT Dallas, but the Saints performance demonstrated composure, resilience, and strong individual contributions that kept the game competitive despite challenging stretches.

Shayla Dede led OLLU with an exceptional all-around performance, scoring 24 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Her ability to attack the basket and convert at the free-throw line provided consistent offensive stability. Alexandra Westerdijk Martin added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, effectively controlling the paint and anchoring OLLU's interior presence on both ends.

Although the Saints struggled with offensive consistency, shooting 34.7 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from three, their defensive effort remained noteworthy. OLLU forced 17 turnovers and recorded 11 steals, with several players, led by Dede, Todd, Fields, and Hernandez, contributing to a disciplined and active defensive front.

Rebounding was a key strength for the Saints, who matched UNT Dallas with 42 total boards, including 34 on the defensive end. Westerdijk Martin's 10 defensive rebounds were particularly important in limiting second-chance opportunities for the Trailblazers.

Despite UNT Dallas benefiting from a high-scoring performance by Shandrea Yeldell, who finished with 30 points, the Saints maintained their competitiveness throughout the game. OLLU also held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, converting 24-of-33 attempts for 72.7 percent, compared to Dallas' 46.9 percent.

Turnovers proved costly for OLLU, as 23 giveaways created openings for Dallas to extend possessions and control portions of the game. However, the Saints defensive pressure and rebounding kept the deficit manageable, and their effort and discipline remained evident across all four quarters.

The Saints will be back in action Thursday against Jarvis Christian at 5:30 PM CDT.
