Saints Volleyball Shocks Powerhouse Texas Lutheran in 3-2 Win

 

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 20, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) shocked NCAA D3 powerhouse Texas Lutheran University (TLU) with a 3-2 win in a nonconference matchup Wednesday night. The Saints improve to 14-4, while the Bulldogs drop to 22-6.

History

The Saints are 5-3 against TLU. Earlier this season, the Saints lost to TLU in Seguin, Texas, 3-0.

Basics

The Saints knew the match was going to be a tough one, so they came out ready to battle in the first set as they won 25-21. The game was evenly matched with the Bulldogs logging 13 kills compared to OLLU's 12, but the Saints had just three errors on 51 attacks, while TLU had six errors on 54 attacks.

In the two subsequent sets, TLU displayed their resilience by pushing through a 25-19 win over the Saints. Both teams had the same amount of kills in each set, but the Saints committed more errors giving the Bulldogs the edge.

With TLU ahead 2-1, the Saints overpowered the Bulldogs in the fourth set, tallying 14 kills on 43 attacks with 10 errors. TLU was limited to eight kills, three errors on 40 attacks. The Bulldogs were ahead early on, but the momentum turned around toward the latter part as the Saints kept their composure to force the fifth set.

The Saints took the early lead in the final game and never let go of it as they drove to the end with the 15-8 win. The Saints kept the Bulldogs to just four kills, while adding nine to win the game and the match 3-2.

On the offense

Overall, the Saints tallied 51 kills with 35 errors on 186 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .086. TLU had 41 kills with 18 errors on 178 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .129.

Mia Dorsey led the Saints with 16 kills. Madison Weisinger had 11 kills for TLU.

Lauren Reynard assisted on 35 plays for the Saints while Shavonne Respondek tallied 19 assists for TLU.

Defensive standouts

OLLU had a total of 101 digs, led by Tina Trevino with a single-game record-breaking 39. Lexi Morris tallied 26 digs for the Bulldogs.

Serving it up

Tijana Kruta and Camila Ramirez added two aces for the Saints. Peyton Sulak led her team with two service aces.

What's next

The Saints will travel to New Orleans this weekend for a Red River Athletic Conference two-match series on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 against Xavier University of Louisiana.
