Saints Sweep William Carey, Fall Short in Five-Set Thriller Against Texas Wesleyan
San Antonio, Texas- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team showed both dominance and determination in a competitive doubleheader, starting with a clean 3-0 sweep of William Carey University before falling in a hard-fought five-set match to Texas Wesleyan University. The Saints opened the day on a high note, controlling their matchup against William Carey with set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 26-24. OLLU's offense was sharp and consistent throughout, led by Mia Francis with 17 kills and Clarissa Rodriguez with 10. Lauren Reynard fueled the attack with 42 assists, spreading the ball effectively and keeping William Carey's defense guessing. Defensively, Chanisty Villarreal Bermea was a steady presence, notching 14 digs to help the Saints close out each set with poise.
In their second match of the day, OLLU faced Texas Wesleyan in what turned into a five-set battle filled with momentum swings and clutch performances. The Saints started slowly, dropping the first set 15-25 as Texas Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead. However, the Saints quickly bounced back in the second set, regrouping and responding with a dominant 25-17 win to even the match. With renewed energy, OLLU carried their momentum into the third set, executing well on both ends to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Texas Wesleyan, however, was not finished. In a tightly contested fourth set, the Rams edged out a 25-22 win to force a decisive fifth set. The final frame was a thriller, with both teams trading leads and diving for every point. Despite OLLU's relentless effort, Texas Wesleyan managed to escape with a narrow 15-13 win, sealing the 3-2 victory in one of the most intense matches the Saints have played this season.
Despite the loss, OLLU had several standout performances. Mia Francis once again led the way offensively with 18 kills in the second match, capping off a dominant day at the net. Lauren Reynard added 25 assists, continuing to quarterback the offense effectively, while Carly Dossett contributed 10 assists to give the Saints versatility in their attack. On defense, Chanisty Villarreal Bermea finished with an impressive 20 digs, covering the court with intensity and hustle. Sophia Castillo also made her mark with 14 digs, playing a key role in keeping long rallies alive.
Although they fell just short in the second match, the Saints proved they can compete at a high level, even in the face of adversity. Their 3-0 sweep earlier in the day and their grit in pushing Texas Wesleyan to five sets reflect a team with depth, heart, and talent. The Saints will play against St. Edwards in Austin on Friday, August 22nd.
