Saints Battle Hard on Senior Day, Fall Short to Xavier
San Antonio, Texas- The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints volleyball team fought with heart and determination but ultimately fell 3-0 to Xavier University (LA) inside Mabee Gym. The Saints played with tenacity in front of an energetic home crowd, but despite several hard-fought rallies and late pushes, the visiting Gold Nuggets escaped with set scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-20.
The Saints came out strong in the opening set, trading points with Xavier in a fast-paced, emotional battle. Every kill, every block, every dig seemed to carry extra meaning on senior day, and the energy from the bench and the stands was electric. OLLU pushed the Gold Nuggets to the brink, nearly stealing the set before Xavier closed it out with a narrow two-point margin.
Setter Lauren Reynard once again showcased her leadership on the court, orchestrating the offense with precision and tallying 35 assists, keeping the Saints attack balanced and competitive throughout the match. Mia Francis powered the front line with 16 kills, consistently finding seams in Xavier's defense and keeping OLLU within striking distance in each set. Defensively, Chanisty Villarreal Bermea anchored the back row with 14 digs, reading the court well and giving the Saints chance after chance to stay alive in extended rallies.
Though the second and third sets slipped away, the Saints never quit. The team's chemistry, fight, and spirit were evident from the first serve to the final point. Every player on the court and on the bench played with pride for OLLU and their seniors, embodying the true heart of the program.
While the scoreboard didn't reflect the effort and emotion poured into the match, the Saints can walk away knowing they competed with intensity against a strong Xavier squad. With the regular season winding down, OLLU will now turn its focus to bouncing back next Friday against Texas College in Tyler, Texas, eager to finish the season strong and carry their fight into postseason play.
