Saints Battle to the Final Buzzer in Narrow Loss to Xavier
San Antonio, Texas- Our Lady of the Lake University fought through four quarters of physical, disciplined basketball before coming up short in a 57–52 loss to Xavier (LA). Despite the final margin, OLLU stayed within striking distance throughout the contest.Led by Alexandra Westerdijk Martin, who posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while anchoring the paint on both ends. Evangeline Hernandez carried the offensive load, scoring a game-high 17 points and consistently attacking the defense to keep the Saints within reach. Isabella Jaramillo added 11 points and distributed the ball effectively, helping OLLU maintain composure in key stretches.
Defensively, the Saints were active, recording nine steals and forcing Xavier into 22 turnovers. Anissa Cardona set the tone with three steals and strong help defense, while Macie Moss controlled the defensive boards with nine rebounds. OLLU's effort limited Xavier's overall shooting efficiency and kept the game competitive deep into the fourth quarter.
The difference came from beyond the arc, where Xavier connected on seven three-pointers compared to OLLU's four. That shooting efficiency allowed Xavier to answer several OLLU runs and protect a narrow lead late. Free throws and timely shots from multiple Xavier players prevented the Saints from fully swinging momentum in their favor.
OLLU finished shooting 34.5 percent from the field and stayed even in rebounding for much of the night. The Saints late push fell short as Xavier grabbed the road win. The Saints will be back in action Thursday away against Lousiana Christian at 5:30 PM CDT.
