Georgetown, Texas- The Our Lady of the Lake women's soccer team walked off the field on Friday after being dealt a frustrating 3-1 loss to the Southwestern University Pirates. The Saints dominated nearly every statistical category, but the scoreboard didn't reflect their relentless effort.
Monica Sanchez gave the Saints an early spark, finding the back of the net in the 14th minute. Her clinical finish was set up by Leah Tapia, who served a perfectly timed assist to break the Pirates back line. The early goal hinted at a promising afternoon for OLLU, who continued to press high and surround the goal on the offensive end.
The Saints unleashed 27 total shots, 14 of which were on frame, forcing the Southwestern squad into 13 saves. OLLU also earned three corners and controlled possession for extended stretches. But despite the offensive fireworks, only one shot found its way through the net.
Southwestern, in contrast, made the most of their limited chances. With just 10 total shots and five on goal, the Pirates managed to convert three of them, capitalizing on small gaps in the Saints back line. Their goals came at the 55th, 67th, and 85th minutes, all during a stretch of play where OLLU's press left them slightly exposed defensively.
Saints goalkeeper London Suarez, who played the full 90 minutes, was tested five times and managed two saves. Though the scoreline will read three goals allowed, Suarez stood tall during critical moments, with several other opportunities broken up by her communication, positioning and the Saints defensive team play.
It was a tough result for a Saints squad that played with heart, intensity, and attacking purpose but the Saints will not have long to dwell on this one. They will return home next Thursday for a 1:00 PM kickoff against Texas A&M-Texarkana.
