SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 19, 2022) – The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) volleyball team downed Evangel University (EU) in a five-set thriller in the Alamo City Volleyesta to open the 2022 season on Friday night. The Saints start 1-0 while the Valor drop to 1-1 overall.

History

The Saints are 1-1 against the Valor in the all-time series.

Basics

OLLU started the 2022 season with a 29-27 first set victory over Evangel. The Valor took an early 9-4 lead and forced a timeout by the Saints. OLLU regrouped and eventually tied the set at 23-23. The Saints forced an error by the Valor on set point and took the frame to grab a 1-0 lead.

Evangel took control of the second set with a .323 hitting percentage and totaled 11 kills in the third set to eventually lead 2-1. The fourth set was the turning point for the Saints, as they climbed back from an 11-6 deficit to take the set 25-22. The fifth set was very competitive with both teams trading points early on. The Saints rallied for five straight points following a 9-9 tie. The Saints grabbed the win with a 15-10 fifth set victory after an attacking error by the Valor.

Camila Ramirez finished with 13 kills on 36 total attacks. Freshman Mia Dorsey followed with 11 kills and had a .250 kill percentage.

In the first set, OLLU recorded 13 kills and five errors on 39 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .205.

The Saints had five kills in the second set and eight errors on 32 total attacks for a hitting percentage of -.094.

In the third set, OLLU recorded 13 kills and eight errors on 38 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .132.

The Saints had nine kills in the fourth set and four errors on 35 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .143.

In the fifth set, OLLU recorded five kills and three errors on 20 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .100.

On the offense

Overall, the Saints had 45 kills for a hitting percentage of .104. Evangel totaled 64 kills for a hitting percentage of .206.

Ramirez led the Saints with 13 kills. Tori Lowry totaled a team-high 19 kills for the Valor.

Lauren Reynard assisted on 30 plays for the Saints while Leah Jackson tallied 23 assists for Evangel.

Defensive standouts

OLLU had a total of 61 digs, led by Evelyn Ortega with 22. Lowry tallied 17 digs for the Valor.

Serving it up

Reynard had two service aces for the Saints. Sharayah Seymour had four aces for Evangel.
